An Exclusive Interview With Multi Talented Artist Dr. Ally K

Thanks for having me I am Dr. Ally K. I am a medical doctor by profession and recently decided to get back into my music. So this year we decided to release a six song EP because I’m working on an album and it went crazy viral on Spotify within a few weeks and it’s really exciting. I was shocked it went from 17 listeners to 42K in under three weeks.

Q: How easily do songs tend to come to you?

Ans :Depends on the situation. If I am asked to write a song for a soundtrack or a cause, I usually start with lyrics and then the lyrics guide me in terms of the melody line.
I am much prefer to start from scratch and it’s the melody line 1st in my head and then I sing it into the phone. It’s so funny to listen back at the early recordings.

Q: For our readers who have never heard your music, explain your sound ?

Ans: Basically Pop, Top 40 EDM mostly youthful.

Q: You write all of your own music; where do you draw inspiration from ?

Ans: The world around me. It used to be more about my feelings, my own trials and tribulations- and now it’s more about other peoples feelings, for example, ‘The Best (Mean Girl) is about a young girl struggling with her place, her identity and her environment in school.

Q: At what age did you start singing?

Ans: I took singing lessons at seven years old. I did all of my Royal Conservatory exams and won all kinds of music festivals when I was a kid. It’s a little surprising that I ended up being a doctor but at least I’m singing again now!

Q: what made you decide to restart your singing career?

Ans: It started out as a hobby. I was just revamping old songs and then I started writing new songs and now I’m putting together an album. We just released a six song EP, it’s doing extremely well on Spotify as I mentioned . I’m kind of shocked but it’s amazing..

Q:Who are your inspirations?

Ans: I love Jewel, Madonna, and I’m pretty crazy about Sheryl Crow.

Q: If you could perform with anyone, in the future, who would it have to be?

Ans: It would have to be with…Bradley Cooper! I know he isn’t a “singer”, but he amazed me with ‘Shallow’

When I watched, A Star is Born, I almost passed out because the name of the star is Ally and I am Ally ! So it was a foreshadow for my own life! What a trip.

Q:What is your favorite song to sing live?

Ans:I love to sing “On my own” from Les Miserables. Or rock out to ‘Dream On’ by Aerosmith!

Q: Is your family musical?

Ans: Totally. My Aunt, Debbi sings and plays the piano and her husband Bennett is a musician as well. My brother, Jess co-wrote 3 of the 6 songs on the latest EP release.
My son has severe autism but is totally influenced by music and my daughter Lexi sings some back up on the EP.

Steve has played guitar for us for 18 years. And he’s a good singer. But he’s not on the album. Couldn’t get him in the studio.

Q: How do you balance your music with being a doctor?

That is a very good question. I did a lot of the recording on my days off. I write music in my free time.
Touring is going to be very very difficult thing to negotiate… and that’s the next step.
