7 Quick Ways To Solve The Sewing Machine Problems

As your sewing machine comes to life and helps you transform lifeless pieces of fabric into a personalized work of art, you might face a few problems. Whether you are a novice or an experienced seamstress, most sewing machine problems can be solved easily by properly setting up the machine according to the user manual and following the instructions. If everything is properly set up and your machine doesn’t work properly you might check the following solutions to have your best sewing machine back to normal:

Your thread is bunching under the stitches:

Make sure that your thread tension is right for the fabric you are using and that the bobbin is correctly threaded. First, release the presser and rethread the machine with the foot down. Then raise the level of your tension to the highest level to make sure that you have the right one. Also, check the position of the bobbin case according to the user manual.

Skipping stitches:

If your machine was working just fine and started to skip stitches, then it is about time to you change your needle. Needles are made of metal and may accidentally bend while you are enthusiastically tugging on your fabric while sewing or forcefully feeding the fabric through the feed dog.

Breaking or knotting threads:

Make sure that you are using quality threads that won’t throw much lint or won’t knot. Check that your machine is threaded correctly. You can unthread your machine and rethread it again according to the user manual. Make sure that the bobbin is well threaded and placed in the correct place.

Your machine is too loud:

If your machine is exceptionally loud, stop it immediately. The internal parts might be jammed, or lint build up might be hindering the proper performance of the machine. Disassemble the machine and clean the internal parts. Oil the machine regularly according to the user manual to protect the internal components against wear and tear and rust as well. Test the machine with a piece of scrap fabric before you presume sewing.

Seams and Stitches don’t look professional:

Washing the fabric and having it ironed or steamed before sewing it will ensure that your sewn pieces have a professional look. Watch the seam guide rather than the needle and make sure that you are not forcefully tugging on the fabric and only pressing it to make sure that it is evenly sewn.

Needles keep on breaking:

If your needle keeps on breaking that it is too delicate for the fabric you are using. Needles are sized from 8 to 18 with 18 as the sturdiest thickness. Use the suitable needle to make sure that your stitches look even and to prolong the life of your needle.

You checked everything, but the machine isn’t working

Check that the bobbin winder shaft is correctly positioned to the left. Make sure that the threading line on the hand wheel is at the top position. For top loading bobbins, the thread needs to be going around the bobbin in an anti-clockwise direction. Finally, check that the foot is lowered before sewing.
