There’s a fundamental generosity here, matched by assured
technical precision. Duck à l’orange sees a plump
breast cooked rare, the skin crisp, the sauce just the right side
of bitter. It comes with a fat potato fondant and cabbage spiked with shards of smoked bacon. I eat rump of lamb, four vast just-pink slices, drenched in the stickiest, most gloriously intense
of gravies; by its side, a tiny shepherd’s
pie, one bite of pure ovine brilliance.
Puddings are every bit as fine: a lemon tart, beautifully
sharp, with damson sorbet (this part of the Lake
District is famed for its damsons); along with a banana soufflé,
this time the classic version but ethereal, served with vanilla ice cream and a pot
of sticky-toffee sauce to pour deep into its molten centre.
This is good old-fashioned food, immaculately
done, in the sort of pub designed for lingering. It’s getting late now, and we’ve an early start.
But first, another bottle of wine. Dinners like this are too rare to be rushed.

Penny Lancaster is prepared to go to ‘authorities’ to discuss what happened during cut scenes with MasterChef’s Gregg Wallace after the host stepped down from the BBC show amid a series of misconduct claims.
Fans will remember Penny, 53, leaving Celebrity MasterChef in tears in 2021, after Gregg,
60, told her off with the ‘serious’ delay of her food and then refused
to eat what she served.
A spokesperson for Penny Lancaster told MailOnline: ‘While Penny is happy to talk to the appropriate authorities should they feel she has anything useful to add, she will not be discussing the matter with
any broadcaster or newspaper at this time.’
Penny’s husband Rod Stewart accused Gregg of ‘humiliating’ Penny and then having
the footage ‘cut’ from the show on Instagram on Thursday, although the production company is yet to comment on the incident.
The moment when Gregg refused to eat Penny’s tartar sauce – blasting her for using ‘whole eggs instead of egg yolks’ – re-emerged after her husband Rod branded him a ‘tubby bully’.
Gregg also chastised Penny – who is a volunteer special police constable – for being late serving her food to critics in the quarter finals, leaving her in tears.

Following Gregg’s departure, Rod Stewart released a statement to Instagram branding him a ‘tubby bully’
Gregg, stepped away from MasterChef amid accusations of ‘sexualised’ behaviour
during filming of the hit BBC show.
Following the announcement, Sir Rod wrote: ‘Good riddance Wallace…
You humiliated my wife when she was on the show, but you had that bit cut out didn’t you?

When initially tasked with making her own tartar sauce the former Loose Woman star seemed to believe she was getting off
to a promising start, beaming with confidence. She quipped to the camera: ‘I’m doing
surprisingly well compared to what I imagined how
I’d be doing. I don’t want to slip up now.’
But she spoke too soon as her sauce quickly went wrong as John delivered the devastating blow

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31% and a critic score of 32%.
The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with director Todd Phillips’ process telling Variety
he ‘wanted nothing to do with DC’ during the making of the
film, with DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s
LA premiere afterparty last month.
A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe
$150 [million] worldwide. Not a billion. People showed up because that guy
was Joker.’
In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a DC Studios logo.
A Warner spokesman added that a DC logo appears at the
end of the Joker sequel, while Phillips declined
to comment to the publication.
Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims
that Michael DeLuca, Chairperson of Warner Bros.
Entertainment, and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to
Phillips due to his huge past successes.
It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC
two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.
Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but
Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter: ‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also met with Phillips shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a
lower price point.’
The studio wanted to film in London which
would have cost around 20 per cent less.

‘The one thing about genre stuff: If you don’t listen and pay attention to what the fan expectations are,

budget remaining static.
A Warner spokesman told the publication the studio ‘supported the
decision to film in Los Angeles’.

IQOS is a smokeless tobacco heating device that was developed by Philip
Morris and sold in the United States by Altria until the U.S.
trade regulator banned the import and sale of the product last year following patent claims from rival R.J.
Reynolds.

overturn the ban

Altria, which sells cigarette brands like Marlboro in the United States,
was spun off from Philip Morris International in 2008 when the company wanted
to separate its U.S. and overseas businesses.
Altria said one of its subsidiaries had an option to extend the
IQOS contract until April 2029 after it had reached certain milestones.
However, Philip Morris disagreed with Altria’s position.
“The parties were unable to reach a long-term agreement and decided to enter into the Agreement to transition and ultimately conclude their relationship,”
Altria said in a statement.
Philip Morris, which reports quarterly results later on Thursday, aims to resume supply of IQOS products in the United States by the first half of
2023.
Altria still holds the rights to sell IQOS in the United States until May 2024, after which it
transitions to Philip Morris.
“We are ready to invest behind IQOS to bring it to market at scale across the U.S.,” Philip Morris Chief Executive Officer Jacek Olczak said.
Altria said it has already received $1 billion from Philip Morris and will receive the remainder by July 2023.

raised its buyout offer
for Swedish Match AB in a last-ditch effort to get shareholder support for its $16
billion move into the fast-growing market for cigarettes alternatives.

Nothing signals the start of winter quite like the return of the Fair Isle knit.

The knit is named after the small, eponymous Shetland Island in Scotland and uses a traditional knitting
technique to create those distinctive patterns with multiple
colours. It was brought into vogue by an earlier Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in the 1920s,
and has remained a casual wardrobe staple for members of the Royal Family, including Kate Middleton, whose jumper collection includes at
least three different Fair Isle designs.

Another fan of the nostalgic knit is Alexa Chung, who recently layered a Fair Isle vest by
Molly Goddard over a light blue button-down in a snap for Instagram.
The It-girl previously also wore a V-neck vest from Cotswolds-based knitwear brand Cooking Apple,
and sported a chunky Fair Isle crewneck with white,
straight-leg jeans, black loafers and an oversized, black leather blazer to ring
in the festive season at private members’ club in London last year.
A host of designers have dropped Fair Isle-inspired knits for
AW24, proving the multicoloured jumpers have become a timeless investment.

He went on a diet of lettuce, asparagus and apples which

Five years later he has returned to the Oscar-winning
role again in Joker: Folie a Deux – and says that he had to lose almost the same amount of
weight once more, and is never doing it again.
Speaking at the Venice Film Festival he said: ‘I’m not going to talk through specifics of the
diet, because I just think nobody wants to hear that.
‘But this time, it felt a bit more complicated just because there was so much dance rehearsal that we were doing, which I
didn’t have last time.
‘It felt a bit more difficult, but it is safe. But you’re
right, I’m now 49, I probably shouldn’t do this again. This is
probably it for me.’

‘By the end of that run I was so sick of myself and angry at myself for making such a big

‘When Joaquin was too hungry we fed him blueberries.’

the success of The Joker.
He said: ‘I’m more nervous of this one than the first one. The first one we were under the radar,
this one everyone was writing on the internet about
it.’
The Warner Bros film is released on October 4th.
After the release of the first film, Joaquin shut down rumours he only ate an apple a day to achieve his astonishing weight
loss, telling Access Hollywood that he consumed more food
than that — though not much more.
‘It wasn’t an apple a day. No, you’ve also got lettuce and steamed green beans,’ he
said of what he ate in preparation for the role.

Although Joaquin has lost weight for roles before, he admitted that

The Her star recalled how the producer always had the one food item he craved on hand, which made his
diet a bit more of a struggle.
‘Todd did have these f*****g pretzels that I love. And he’d just have bags of them in his office!’
he said. ‘And that was difficult.’
Joaquin’s character is wearyingly thin in the film, and he admitted that he had reservations about taking on such a drastic weight loss.
‘It’s a horrible way to live,’ he told the New York Times.
‘I think [the Joker] should be kind of heavy.
Todd was like, ‘I think you should do the real thin person.”
Joaquin previously said his extreme diet helped him prepare for the
role in more ways than one.
‘The first thing for us was the weight loss — I
think that’s really what I started with,’ he said
of working with the film’s director.
‘And, as it turns out, that then affects your psychology.
You start to go mad when you lose that amount of weight in that amount of time.’

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days
after a chaotic election, set to test the ruling party’s 34-year grip on power, was marred by
technical problems.
Tensions are mounting in the historically stable and peaceful southern African nation where
Wednesday’s election was marked by long delays and labelled a
“sham” by the opposition.
Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and
legislative polls, billed as the toughest yet for the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from South africa.
Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical problems, including issues with tablets used to register voters and shortages of ballot papers.
In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and
mobile voting teams had left areas with voters still in the
queues, it said.
Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral
commission extended the vote for a second time, giving Namibians
until Saturday evening to vote.
In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday,
including Kluivert Muuondjo who arrived at 4:30 am.
The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until 11:00 pm on Wednesday but
left before being able to vote as he had exams the next day.

“Everyone will have the chance to vote,” he said.
But because Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he was worried
“everyone will flock to one place again.”
The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties
with some calling for a halt in the electoral process.
Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday and issue a joint statement,
according to Christine Aochamus who represents the Independent Patriots
for Change (IPC) party.
Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a
generation born after independence are challenging support towards SWAPO which
has ruled since 1990.
Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah,
who could become the first woman to lead the country if
elected, could face an unprecedented second round in the mineral rich country.
“To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,” said voter Ensley Engermund, who
also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of long
queues despite trying four different polling stations.
“Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?” asked the 49-year-old security
agent.
“It was to get people frustrated.”

The partner of the ex-CEO of the Abercrombie and Fitch clothing line pleaded not guilty Tuesday in US federal court to charges of sex trafficking and interstate prostitution and was released
on $10 million bond.
Briton Matthew Smith, the ex-CEO Mike Jeffries and
their fixer James Jacobson allegedly used a “casting couch” ploy to groom aspiring
male models to attend sex parties at which victims were plied with alcohol and drugs.
After his arrest in October in Florida with Jeffries,
Smith was held in custody in New York. Smith appeared in court Tuesday in Central Islip on Long Island, to
the east of New York City.
Smith pleaded not guilty and was released on a $10 million bond
put up by Jeffries and his family, said a statement from the US attorney’s office for the eastern district of New
York.
An AFP photographer saw Smith leave the courthouse with what appeared to be a large electronic surveillance bracelet attached to his
ankle.

Another hearing is scheduled for December 10 for Smith, Jeffries and Jacobson.
Jeffries, 80, was released on a $10 million bond in late October.
Jeffries, who served as CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch from
1992 to 2014, is accused of creating and maintaining
a ring that recruited young men to have sex with him and Smith.
Prosecutors allege that between December 2008 and March 2015 Jeffries, Smith and Jacobson used a combination of
“force, fraud and coercion” to traffic men in a
sprawling prostitution enterprise.
Charging documents detail 15 anonymous victims, but prosecutors
suggest the scale was probably much larger and have appealed for witnesses and victims
to come forward.
Prosecutors say young men were taken to the New York home of Jeffries and Smith and to
hotels in Britain, France, Italy, Morocco to have
sex with them.
Jeffries faces the prospect of life in prison if convicted.
Jacobson also pleaded not guilty to the same charges as the other defendants and was released
on half a million dollars bond in October.

Having sex in the desert, a library and on a plane were some of the most upvoted responses, Huffpost reported.

to have sex in the desert at night when coming back from Vegas.
But in reality, they were met with ‘creepy crawly desert things
don’t sleep at night’.
Another, u/DonSmitty said a ‘buddy in high school’ covered his girlfriend
(including her genitals) in chocolate syrup. But it didn’t end well — she got infected with a ‘crazy’ yeast
infection.
Doing it in a storage unit was another unusual fantasy which ended badly.
User u/isthisfark wrote: ‘There’s a closing time and if you miss it you’ll get stuck behind the gates for

in real life. But a handful of those who have tried to make their browser history a reality have confessed they didn’t quite go to plan —
